"Catch Me If You Can" (2002)
This is a brilliant film. Based on a true story, the film
depicts the life of Frank Abagnale, a con artist who successfully posed as an
airline pilot, a doctor, and an attorney...all before his 19th
birthday, as well as cashing more than $2.5 million in fraudulent checks in around 26 countries!
I think it’s the fact that this is based on a true story
makes the plot all the more outrageous. It just sounds too farfetched to be
true! Directed by Steven Spielberg, it stars Leonardo DiCaprio in the role of
Frank Abagnale, and Tom Hanks as the ferociously determined FBI Agent, Carl Hanratty.
Both actors are excellent in their roles. Other well-known names such as Christopher
Walken, Jennifer Garner, Amy Adams and Martin Sheen also feature.
There are some very funny moments. Some brilliant gags. A
subtle one in particular that stood out for me was during his time as an
airline polite, Frank was called “The James Bond of The Sky”...prompting him to
purchase a specific Bond suit worn by Sean Connery in the film
Goldfinger...under the name “Mr. Flemming” (!)
Another particular moment which made me smile is a scene towards
the beginning of the film in which Frank’s talents were foreshadowed as he took
it upon himself to substitute the French class in his new school! Mr. And Mrs.
Abagnale are summoned to the principal’s office where it transpires their son
had given the week teaching the class, including giving out homework, holding a
parent-teacher meeting, and even planning a school trip to a /French bread-making
factory! Of course, rather than disapprove of his son’s antics, his father
merely laughs in subtle admiration.
It is clear very early on in the film how much Frank looks
up to his father as he frequently attempts to use his tricks of the trade to
get by, as well as retell his “Two Little Mice” anecdote on a few occasions. Following
his parents separation, Frank runs away from home, but rebuilds himself, vowing
to his father that he’s going to get it all back. He certainly makes something
of himself!
I like the relationship between Frank and his father
throughout the film. I also like the relationship between Frank and Carl
Hanratty. It’s clear that Carl is intent on catching Frank for what he is doing,
but he does care about him at the same time. I don’t want to say too much for
those who haven’t seen the film, or who don’t know the story of Frank Abagnale.
(Leonardo DiCaprio with the real Frank Abagnale)
This film is priceless though. It’s fun and enjoyable – a feel-good
watch. It will make you smile and bring out a few laughs. One of my favourite
Leonardo DiCaprio films!
